Is Microsoft Shifting Away from Xbox Exclusives?

There’s a new rumor making the rounds that suggests Microsoft’s days of exclusive Xbox games may be coming to an end, with future titles eventually making their way to PlayStation. While the company is working on new hardware, including a dedicated handheld device, some feel that Microsoft may be shifting away from prioritizing Xbox consoles in favor of becoming a third-party publisher.
Microsoft has been emphasizing the ability to access Xbox games without needing an Xbox console, and this year, several former console exclusives have been made available on other platforms. While the company hasn’t explicitly stated it will abandon exclusivity altogether, Xbox head Phil Spencer has suggested that exclusivity is no longer a beneficial approach. This has led to rumors claiming that Xbox exclusives will soon be a thing of the past.
The rumors come from Jez Corden of Windows Central, a reliable insider within the Xbox community. He previously predicted that all Xbox first-party games would eventually come to PlayStation, and now he’s claiming that future Xbox releases will follow the same path. When questioned on X about why some Xbox games are still exclusive, such as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and South Of Midnight, Corden responded by stating that all Xbox games would come to PlayStation over time. He added that Microsoft doesn’t want to force multiplatform development on teams not yet prepared for it, but that the era of permanent Xbox exclusives is over.
It’s still unclear whether Microsoft will continue with an “Xbox first, then everywhere else” strategy, like with Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, or move to simultaneous multiplatform releases. Regardless, Corden’s track record makes this claim noteworthy, and Microsoft’s recent actions strongly support this shift in strategy. Notably, the only Microsoft-published game featured at The Game Awards 2024 was The Outer Worlds 2, which was confirmed as a multiplatform release for 2025.
In addition to Corden’s insight, Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb also mentioned in a livestream that one of Microsoft’s major 2025 titles has been delayed until 2026, further fueling speculation about the company’s shifting focus.
